Proposal deadline: Monday, December 16, 2019
Guelph Museums is currently seeking proposals from playwrights, storytellers, and/or musicians to produce a summer theatre production for July 2020.
In 2015, Guelph Museums launched Backyard Theatre at McCrae House with A Night in Flanders, an original one-act play by Don Macrae. Since then, performances have included Sons of ’17 by Mike Ford, Guelph in Postcards – The McCrae Years 1872-1918 by Jay Wilson, Mary’s Wedding written by Stephen Massicotte and produced by Jay Wilson; and What I Gave, I Have by Catherine Frid.
McCrae House is the birthplace of John McCrae, the doctor, soldier and poet who wrote In Flanders Fields. Backyard Theatre provides an opportunity for audiences to connect with the legacy of John McCrae in a unique and compelling way. The intent of this initiative is to attract new and repeat audiences to McCrae House, and to provide memorable visitor experiences.
The show should run 50 to 60 minutes without intermission, and the content should reflect themes consistent with John McCrae’s legacy: military service, medical service, poetry, storytelling, adventure, family, 19th century Guelph. The show need not be a literal telling of McCrae’s story, but it does need to have a significant amount of McCrae-specific content and it needs to be factually-based and accurate.
Guelph Museums reserves the right to review, suggest edits, and approve the final script.
The performances open Wednesday, July 8 and run Wednesdays through Saturdays until July 18 at 7 p.m. There will be Saturday matinees at 2 p.m. on July 11 and 18. Performances will take place outdoors, in the backyard of McCrae House. Staging and props need to be simple and portable.
The project budget is $7000 + HST – inclusive of script, production, costumes, props and artist fees.
Guelph Museums will be responsible for stage, seating, sound, marketing, ticket sales, and front of house operations.
Guelph Museums invites applications from qualified writers and producers.
