New Class with Sara Holdren and Upcoming Workshops!

Are you ready to start building something new for the theater industry? A new online class with director and theater maker Sara Holdren been added to the lineup at Primary Stages ESPA! See below for more information about this class and our upcoming workshops:

Instructor: Sara Holdren (Director and former Theater Critic for New York Magazine and Vulture.com)
Sundays from 4:00pm – 7:00pm ET
Starts March 27
Online via Zoom

Why are you a theater artist? What brought you here? What keeps you here? After months of introspection, pause, and reckoning, do you see the art-form you love transforming for the better, or not? If you could make the art you dream of making, what would it look like? How would you change the process, the practice, the world?

In this class—less a class than an anarchic, thoughtful meeting space—we’ll try to envision new possibilities for theater in America. We’ll read texts to ground us in a place of imagining (from Ursula Le Guin to James Baldwin to David Graeber, from whom this class’s title is affectionately borrowed), and we’ll hold as a guiding principle Judith Butler’s “ethical obligation [to be] unrealistic.” We’ll talk, we’ll free-write, and we’ll rediscover what we really want to make and how we want to make it. Come read, listen, dream, and start building something new.

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS!

AriDy Nox (Writer, Black Girl in Paris, Metropolis)
Saturday, March 26 & Sunday, March 27
12:00pm – 4:00pm
Online via Zoom

A musical is only as good as its libretto, the structural backbone of the story that allows the composition to flourish.  In this weekend workshop, you'll focus on this crucial component of musical theater, developing the tools and framework of a musical theater piece.

Instructor: Chesney Snow (Actor and Writer, Soil Beneath at Primary Stages, In Transit on Broadway)
Saturday, April 9 & Sunday, April 10
12:00pm – 4:00pm
Online via Zoom

For far too long, global majority—or BIPOC— populations have been marginalized in the Western theater-making world, and the storytelling for these populations had to become an artform of its own. In this 2-session workshop with Chesney Snow, learn the history of these theatrical forms—such as hip-hop theater, spoken word, theater of the oppressed, and the choreopoem—and begin generating your own piece, pushing the boundaries of traditional theater and reimagining what the future can be.

Start and end dates vary. Click here for the full list of writing classes.
