INKubator 2022-2023 Application
Art House Productions is a performing and visual arts center established in 2001 and located in Jersey City, NJ. Art House is a home for adventurous artists, audiences, and ideas. We engage, inspire, entertain, and challenge audiences with ambitious performing and visual arts programs. We provide arts education programs that promote life-long learning to a diverse community and celebrate the essential power of the arts to illuminate our common humanity.
Art House's INKubator program is an eight-month generative playwriting process for a select group of playwrights-in-residence in Jersey City, culminating in the annual INKubator New Play Festival in May.
Playwrights will meet as a group and in-person monthly from October 2022 to May 2023 alongside program director Alex Tobey to share new pages, receive feedback, and develop the first draft of a brand new play. At the end of the process in May, each writer will team up with a professional director and actors to present a public staged reading, part of the annual INKubator New Play Festival in May.
Applications are open to playwrights who can commit to the program's monthly meetings and festival dates (see details below), and have a play they are passionate about writing and developing with Art House Productions in Jersey City over an eight-month process.

While New Jersey residency is not a requirement for the INKubator program, we are seeking playwrights with some kind of association to New Jersey.
We hope the plays created will be inspired by New Jersey and all its glory, warts and all.
What do we mean by association? Have you…
…ever lived in New Jersey?
…gone to school in New Jersey?
…worked in New Jersey?
…visited the Jersey Shore or somewhere else?
…family in New Jersey?
…any connection at all to New Jersey?
Great! We'd love to hear about it.
At its essence, INKubator supports playwrights and the plays they are creating at their earliest stage of development while also creating opportunities for long-term artistic relationships with Art House and the Art House community. We hope to use our mainstage to fully produce the work of INKubator alumni playwrights and will publish an annual open call for all INKubator Cohorts to submit plays for consideration in future seasons. More on this to come.
Details:
You must be able to commit to all the monthly in-person meetings scheduled at Art House's new home at 180 Morgan Street in Jersey City: October 3, November 7, December 5, January 2, February 6, March 6, and April 3.
Due to the in-person nature of the residency, all playwrights must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

It's okay if the play you pitch already has some pages written, but the collective goal of the residency should be to complete a first draft. If you already have a majority of the play written, all of the answers figured out, or even a completed first draft, we would recommend applying with a play that is much earlier in its development process.
The INKubator New Play Festival is tentatively scheduled for May 5, 6, and 7, 2023. Please hold these dates in your calendar, as we encourage writers to attend the entire festival and properly support the work of their cohort.
INKubator playwrights will receive free admission to all performances, mixers, and other events at Art House Productions.
Playwrights will also have the ability to schedule meetings, rehearsals, and readings as needed for free in Art House's new space (subject to availability).
Art House Productions is committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion and encourages playwrights of all backgrounds, ages, and experience levels to apply.
There is no fee to apply. The deadline to submit is Thursday, September 1 at 11:59PM ET. All applicants will be notified of their status by the end of September.
Submissions will be evaluated by Art House Productions Executive Artistic Director Meredith Burns, INKubator alumni Maddie Dennis-Yates and Christian Mendonça, and INKubator Resident Director Alex Tobey.
Have questions about the application or program? Feel free to email Alex Tobey at alex@arthouseproductions.org.
