ETHICS & AESTHETICS
We value work that challenges aesthetic and cultural boundaries, builds lasting relationships among artists and audiences, engages with under-served and underrepresented communities, and is created and presented in inclusive contexts. Resident Artists are encouraged to engage with these values during their residencies.
We are building a welcoming and inclusive community that spans diverse points of view; cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds; national origins and immigration statuses; ages, abilities, orientations, and gender identities; and religious and spiritual affiliations (or none at all). We call the diverse members of our community into relationship through our shared commitment to creative and intellectual expression. People of color, LGBTQ people, and anyone who encounters barriers to their work because of their personal background or identity are especially encouraged to apply.
PERFORMANCE SPACE
Resident Artists will be provided with one to four weeks of performance space in the 60-seat Balcony Theater (available January through May) or the 200-seat Sanctuary Theater (available in May only). Resident Artists will perform at least three to five shows per residency week.
REHEARSAL SPACE
Resident Artists may book up to 40 hours of rehearsal space at the Center in advance of their residency at a subsidized rate of $10 per hour in the theaters (subject to limited availability) the Chapel.
ARTIST FEE
Resident Artists are paid an Artist Fee of 50% of box office revenue at the end of the residency. The artist fee is paid by check or direct deposit upon completion of load-out at the end of the residency.
TICKETS
Tickets for artist residency performances are usually set at $25 General Admission. Discounted and premium tickets may be sold by arrangement between the artist and the Center. All tickets are sold through the Center’s box office and all ticket revenues are collected by the Center.
Complimentary tickets are provided for press, industry professionals, and Center/production staff at the discretion of the Center. Comps are provided for members of Actors Equity as required under applicable Equity rules. Comps for friends and family are not allowed.
BOX OFFICE & HOUSE MANAGEMENT
Front of house duties are shared by the Center and Resident Artists. The Center is responsible for Box Office Management and Resident Artists are responsible for House Management within the theater. All advance tickets will be sold through the Center’s online box office, and the Center provides a box office manager for in-person cash and card sales at the door up to one hour before curtain.
Resident Artists are responsible for providing a House Manager to be stationed in the theater during performances and in the lobby during intermission and after each performance until all audience members have left. The Center can provide a House Manager for $20 per hour, deducted from the Artist Fee.
Resident Artists my sell pre-packaged food and non-alcoholic beverage concessions and are entitled to all the proceeds thereof. The sale of alcohol at the Center is prohibited. Resident Artists may provide beer and wine free of charge only and may accept donations. If a Resident Artist wishes to offer concessions or complimentary alcoholic beverages, they must provide a bartender for each performance.
MARKETING
Resident artists are responsible for marketing their shows. The Center provides some marketing support, including:
An event page and ticketing on our website
Space for two posters up to 18” wide x 24” tall in our exterior window boxes
Listing with image and blurb in our monthly email newsletter
RESIDENCY DATES & TIMES
Residencies are offered for one to four weeks, beginning and ending on Mondays at noon. Resident Artists are expected to present at least three performances during the first week and at least four performances each subsequent week. Evening performances start at 7:30 or 8:00 PM and must end by 10:30 PM, with audiences out by 11 PM. Weekend matinees are usually not available, but if they are, they start at 1:30 or 2:00 PM and must end by 4:30 PM, with audiences out by 5:00 PM. The theater will be open and available to Resident Artists on the following schedule:
Week 1:
Load-in starts at 10am on Monday
Monday-Wednesday: 10am to 11pm (load in, rehearsal, tech)
Thursday-Saturday: 6pm to 11pm (performances)
Sunday: usually 6pm to 11pm, occasionally 12pm to 11pm (performances)
Weeks 2-4:
Mondays: dark
Tuesdays-Saturdays: 6pm to 11pm (performances)
Sundays: usually 6pm to 11pm, occasionally 12pm to 11pm (performances)
End of Residency:
Load-out ends by 11pm on Sunday
