This year we are asking playwrights to submit a new 10-minute play inspired by the characters in Shakespeare’s pastoral comedy As You Like It (click on title to read play).
PROMPT: After the Curtain: Where are they now?
At the end of As You Like It four couples marry (Rosiland & Orlando, Celia & Oliver, Phoebe & Silvius, Audrey & Touchstone), Jacques is off to pursue a religious life of contemplation, and Duke Senior, his crown newly restored to him, plans to return from exile and create a new court.
Looking 5, 10, 20 years into the future your play should explore the lives of one or more of these characters.
Please keep your cast size to 4 actors. You can have more than 4 characters but the roles will need to be doubled.
PERFORMANCE DATE: Saturday, November 12th
SUBMISSION PROCESS: Please send an email containing 2 PDF copies of your play to contactus@shakespeareonthesound.org.
This is a blind submission process. Only one PDF of your play should contain your name and contact information.
The other PDF should not contain your name or contact information .
FAQ
Does my play need to be in verse? No, your play does not need to be in verse, in fact we prefer that your play is in prose.
Do all the characters in my play need to be from As You Like It? No, only one character in your play needs to be from As You Like It.
Does my play need to be written in the style of Shakespeare and/or set in the time period in which Shakespeare wrote? No! We are excited by plays that reflect the many different genres of theater. Let your imagination soar and choose a style of playwriting that excites you be it experimental, revenge drama, musical, farce, absurdist, etc.
Is this a blind submission process? Yes! See submission process for details on how to submit your play.
When will I be notified if my play has been selected? Playwrights will be notified either way by Friday, October 21, 2022.
